MalaMala Diary Entry: 18 July 1998

Wild dogs Wild dog viewing(Cape hunting dogs) have been providing some superb viewing on Mala Mala over the past few weeks. The pack which has been on the property comprises some eight adults and thirteen pups, the latter approximately ten or twelve weeks old. These dogs had established a den a few months ago on the border between Mala Mala and the Kruger National Park. Now that the pups have become more mobile, the adults have taken to hunting extensively on central Mala Mala, killing successfully and then returning to where they have stashed their cubs.

Yesterday we experienced superb viewing after discovering that the dogs had invaded an active hyaena den, probably killing a small hyaena pup which was in the den at the time. The adults set about hunting, killing two duikers. These small antelope were rapidly consumed and then taken back to the pups for regurgitation. On one of these hunting forays one of the dogs bumped into the White Cloth female leopard which pursued it. The dog managed to escape, joining its companions in a hunt which culminated in the killing of an adult female duiker.
